A Mother's Indifference

I groaned as I finished dressing for the day. The routine that always comforted me only irritated me now. It only reminded me of my demotion. The other Snow Leopards weren't mad at me but merely wished for what they saw as a stronger ruler. It made sense as there could be no mistakes with what was currently unraveling. One misstep could undo centuries of hard work. If the plan failed there was no chance it could ever be completed.

However, it still annoyed me that they decided to allow a new Fangser to be in charge of New Venice. I put on my fedora which completed my outfit. My reflection showed a Dreth that was reminiscent of the days when the Rethi ruled the world. A much simpler time. A time that I would've perished in.

Chapter 8: Sounds of Silence

We were now gathered in the former restaurant. It was Hawn who had decided to take a break from our journey. He was right in that we needed to fully discuss things before going. There had been countless conversations previously, but now we needed to make sure there was no chance of any mistakes. Gaia would tear a Dreth apart if one dared not take the proper precautions. In my time as a scout, if an enemy made a wrong move I would take advantage of it.

"I thought we had decided what to do." Nadia said. "We'll go to New Venice and camp each night."

"That's the basics." Nidae said with an eye roll. "You've never ventured outside of Native Lakes. You don't know how much stress wears down on a person."

"So this is all because you're nervous and not because the plan is unsound."

Chapter 7: Jumping into the Unknown

I yawned as I woke and reached for Frank. My hand only felt air so I assumed he had gotten up before me. He'd be back in bed soon enough, though, as he didn't tend to start his day before me. When did we get new sheets? I held back a cry as I remembered where I was. I wasn't in Native Lakes as that place had been destroyed. All that was left were ashes.

The Call

The air in the station was cold. At least the part I was in. Due to the communication equipment needing to be kept cool, there was always a chill to the air. It reminded me of home so I didn't mind as much as some. The only thing that bothered me was how few times an Earth year I was able to see my family.

"Peter," Heather asked as she walked up behind me. "We were thinking about hanging out at the local bar tonight."
